An Island Gal



I'm sitting in the bushes.. I've cut my leg from a hidden sprinkler system. My sarong is torn and the bugs are biting me. I wouldn't want to be any other place.

This one sunset was worth the wait and the sprinkler system that caught me off guard


The bushes I am sitting in belong to one of Hawaii's last monarchs.. Princess Abigail Kawananakoa. She is quite a woman and not only am i cut , bleeding, hot and bug bit. I am just a little concerned she may find me in her bushes.


Ive noticed that I can always find a bush to be in to get what i think will be a great picture.. It drives me nuts!




if you come to Oahu... make sure you visit the west where the sun sets.. you wont need to be in the bushes there are alot of great places to sit and watch the sunset. I am just......

I, too loved those sunsets, unfortunately, allergic to those bug bites- so severe that I have to get antibiotics.. It never fails Nai...I always get bit when I would come to the islands.

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. I hear the splash and my brain goes into overdrive, "LANI", my brain screams, "DON'T look back,just swim to shore".. i feel my legs getting weak.. "LAN...

Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help.
