IT SMELLS!

Barbers Point, the southern tip of the island of Oahu. A big commercial luau(hawaiian feast) is held out here.




The Coast Guard has a light house and communication towers out here.

The water is shallow and runs over reefs that USED to grow TONS of Seaweed...



I remember my parents bringing me here as a child.. The shore was filled with local people picking seaweed


The shore is no longer lined with Seaweed(hawaiian word for
seaweed is LIMU) like it was when I was a child...



BUT as soon as i got out of my car and walked to the shore, there was ONE thing I remembered from my childhood....


THE SMELL !!! I had to smile... it smells like fresh fish here... the odor so strong , that your first thought is WHHHEEWWWW.It is the smell of the ocean and i think it has to do with the shallow reef that goes on for miles here. LOL.. A older hawaiian man with a fishing net over his shoulder and I were the only ones on the beach!


its funny how SMELL can jar your mind... I remember the purple and green seaweed.. i remember my father sooo allergic to this water because of that seaweed. LOLOL.. poor man ,one dip in this water would send him into a scratching frenzy!! Needless to say, we came here once or maybe twice!

Whats amazing is I hadn't been HERE since i was a child! I, who loves the ocean no matter What or where had not been to this spot in over 40 years! Its THAT SMELL!!!! lol

I can imagine that seaweed smell... But what stands out in my mind is the warm, clear water at the beach in the morning... E.'s favorite spot which is near the hotel where we had dinner on the beach- the L.A. one is called New Otani and the name escapes me ....

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. I hear the splash and my brain goes into overdrive, "LANI", my brain screams, "DON'T look back,just swim to shore".. i feel my legs getting weak.. "LAN...

Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help.
