Cave at the Cove.

My daughter Rayna and I used this cave at the cove as a playground many times. There are certain years that this cave is lined with seaweed and sea moss soooo thick and beautiful it is decadent!

I have tried many times in vain to get a picture looking out of this cave onto the land but the morning light just doesnt do this cave justice.


Last week on my 100th attempt to capture the picture i see in my mind, i realized i was treading water in a pool of sun.





I wondered WHERE the sun was coming from so I looked UP!!



I saw this.












In ALL my years (and thats alot of years) on this island.. Thru ALL the times I swam in this cave.. I HAVE NEVER LOOKED UP !

The fish in the cove must of been having a good chuckle over my silliness...

This looks like a very interesting spot to explore. For you never to look up... I'm not surprised as it seems that you always have your head under the water.

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. I hear the splash and my brain goes into overdrive, "LANI", my brain screams, "DON'T look back,just swim to shore".. i feel my legs getting weak.. "LAN...

Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help.
