Here from the Beginning

I was having one of those , "WHATS wrong with the humans on this planet" days, when i came across this plant with a sign naming the plant. It says,

"Kipukai Seaside Heliotrope".


Growing in the cracks of the rock on the edge of the seaside cliffs, this plant is an indigenous plant, meaning it was growing here from the beginning of civilization on the island. It wasnt brought here, it has lived here .

That little sign speaks volumes. It says to me someone cares !! The island of Oahu has very few plants left that are indigenous. Like most things that are extremely good this sign does not say who put it there !! God Bless the person or persons who put this sign there. It could not of been easy. My foremost thought while taking this pic was , LANI, please do not fall on the plant and kill it !! LOL... i am an island girl.

That's so awesome. : ) Did you know that stateside, there are groups of people that go into a forest scheduled for destruction for future housing developments, and they dig up as many native plants as they can, and transplant them somewhere safe. It makes my heart melt. : ) I wish I could find people like that where I live. Sadly, most of the groups are in New England or on the west coast where the rest of the open-minded people are.

You live in the most beautiful place on earth. It's wonderful to see that people care about preserving what they can. Your beautiful islands, and the people who lived there were decimated by "civilization".

Yes, civilisation is not always so civilised. Please tell us more about your wonderful islands in future. I have grown up with Hawai as one of my mysterious, wonderful places and would love to know more about it.

Jo i so agree, Oahu is sooo overpopulated. If you visit go to Kauai or Maui, they are such worth it islands !!

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. I hear the splash and my brain goes into overdrive, "LANI", my brain screams, "DON'T look back,just swim to shore".. i feel my legs getting weak.. "LAN...

Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help. I am not a professional and I know that good intentions are not always enough. You have to KNOW what you are doing. I could hurt a turtle more than help it so i needed to use my head.
