The River


This satellite picture shows the Waimea Valley River flowing into the ocean. This is NOT an all year occurance , rather a once a year during the heavy rains , mother nature at her finest occassion. Problem is the dolphins donot like the fresh water mixed with the salt water.

Since the whole Bay becomes involved in this proccess, the dolphins if they are in the area, will swim right by the Bay, never stopping.






Such was the case on Saturday, i saw the dorsal fins, i saw them leaping out of the water,I knew they wouldnot stop, but ever hopeful, i scrambled into the water anyway. I started singing and splashing, breathless ,swimming my heart out. I noticed the people on shore standing, they saw them too, most people on shore donot see them till they are close so i knew if the people on shore saw them they were getting closer!!
Then BAM, they sense the water change and they are GONEEEEE.. sigh.... and so my wait continues......

In South Africa we have a couple of rivers that does that, only flow into the sea when they are in flood. Unfortunately, because of housing estate developement at the mouths of some of them, this has become more rare and it is unbelievable what damage tot he ecosystems this causes. Our so-called civilisation! All it is, is the human beings self-centeredness and greed and civil authorities run by the very people who make a profit from these luxury estates. Sad really!

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. I hear the splash and my brain goes into overdrive, "LANI", my brain screams, "DON'T look back,just swim to shore".. i feel my legs getting weak.. "LAN...

Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help.
