NANO second.

Three miles straight out from where I swim with the dolphins, a boat pulls up, stops its engines, and throws a big silver cage overboard. The people who operate the boat then load people down into this cage and hang a big piece of raw meat off the boat. Needless to say, the BIG Tiger Sharks in the area and the occasional Great White Shark smell a meal. If they are not there when the boat gets there , they will show up shortly. The humans in the cage are given a rare opportunity to see a big shark up close without getting hurt. This activity in recent years, has changed the way I swim with the dophins. Now a human isnt shark food but accidents happen. Three miles seems like a long way but to a BIG SHARK it is a NANO second. I now pay GREAT attention to what and HOW the dolphins are acting. I have had them swim into the bay, swim around me a couple times highly, highly excited and then VERY quickly dissappear, when this happens i need to be close to shore. If they leave in a split second, I need to be headed for shore!!! They KNOW WHATS IN THE WATER, I dont, I dont have their sonar!!! Ive wondered every year for a couple years now, "will I see the dolphins again this year ?" so far, so good !!!! I love the Ocean and ALL the creatures in it !!

I cannot imagine the ocean without dolphins, or for that matter, without sharks. You are fortunate to know the watery world so well.

Balance Patricia, yes i agree, to have dolphins we must have sharks!!! They are both so beautiful in their own way. If you have time check out The adventures of Maui Don-dolphin dude. He is part fish i swear...lol.. i have never met him, but i think he is a special guy.

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help.
