Down,Under and Around.

IT was crowded on shore.. its Sunday the beach is busy. I swam out deeper than i usually do because i knew the dolphins, if they came could hear those people on shore and that might make them a little less likely to swim in to shallower water. They appeared out of nowhere, first the moms and the babies, and like I thought they were not comfortable with the noise coming from shore. I manage to get one grainy rough picture of a mom and young baby. The pod of Moms, babies and babysitters didnt linger long they moved on out.














Following them was the pod I call the "rowdies" younger males, high energy. LOVE to play. Sure enough, they take one look at me...






dove down right next to me









proceed to swim UNDER me.....








THEN they start swimming around my body in circles.










A little nervous at first i quickly relaxed when i saw one of the dolphins had a brown LEAF in his mouth!
Can you see it ? rascals, they were playing!!

LOLOL... I am an island gal...

It is so wonderful to see that it seems that the dolphins have accepted you into their group like this. They will probably move away if somebody else had to get this close to them. Most people would give their front teeth to swim with dolphins like that.

You can tell Fire that the dolphins recognize you. Dolphins see with sonar, so i think i have spent so long in the water their sonars pick up my form which they recognize.

(I don't know if you write about the sea, but she is always looking for good writing that is ocean related)...just thought of that when I saw the photos and read how you swam with those beautiful creatures...

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. I hear the splash and my brain goes into overdrive, "LANI", my brain screams, "DON'T look back,just swim to shore".. i feel my legs getting weak.. "LAN...

Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help.
