Nu'uanu Pali


The Tradewinds are back with a vengence. The north shore was a little rough so I decided to go to what my dad called, the windest place on earth..lol.. I don't know if it is the windest place on earth but the guy in the video almost lost his wifes purse and I almost lost my camera !! The sound you hear on the video is the wind !
The Hawaiians used the Pali as a means to get from one side of the island to the other, my mom and i traveled it when i was very young. I saw MANY overturned cars back then so it was with great relief that a tunnel was built thru the mountain so cars are safe from the wind. Like most places important to the ancient Hawaiians the view is amazing.


The road to and from the windy lookout is like a mini jungle ride. So different from the ocean shore im used to but equally as beautiful. We have no snakes here in Hawaii so being in this lush green world is truly wonderful . I am an island gal....

LOL Barry!! I always have a blast when i go there. There is someting about the wind and the height of the pali that gets ur blood going .

Hey Island Girl. Thanks for being worried about me. I am out of town at the moment with only occational internet connection. I will be back home on Monday so will post on Firefly Photo Files on Tuesday again. For my PE Daily Photo blog I did forward posts for the time I'm out of town.
A big cold front is passing over South Africa's south coast and the wind is blowing up a storm.

Mark and Steve used to go up to the Pali with a sheet and make a sail out of it and jump in the air and it would take them about 20 feet. A few hard falls but hey, that is part of being young...

One time myself and the boys were hiking above the Pali Lookout and on the way down I fell, cut my hand with my machete, rolled right down in front of a bus load of Japanese tourist. When they saw me rolling down the hill and then my bloody hand, they panicked, jumped back on the tour bus and would not come out. Sorry to have spoiled their tour..Ha !

The Splash

The water in the Bay has calmed down enough for me to swim into the big cave at the bay. I enter the crystal clear water of a little bay that's sits within the Big bay and made my way toward the cave. The tides are still high, the ocean not quite ready for the low low tides of summer. I enter the big cave that is still partially filled with water. The tide is pushing me in and out of the cool cave like a ride at the carnival! In and out... in and out of the cave, all the while I'm trying like crazy to get a picture from the inside of the cave looking out. It was on my 20Th trip with the tide back into the cave that I heard the splash behind me. Now, for me a splash behind me causes my heart to immediately start racing. Why? well when sharks feed they have a certain tail movement that causes a splash. I hear the splash and my brain goes into overdrive, "LANI", my brain screams, "DON'T look back,just swim to shore".. i feel my legs getting weak.. "LAN...

Swims with Scissors

The weather here on Oahu has been yucky for the last week so I was surprised yesterday the 15th to see that the breezes had returned , the sky was blue and when i checked the surf report the waves on the North shore had calmed way down. I ventured down to the turtle rock i had been having so much fun at. I had seen the turtle below on my first day at the turtle rock. He had gotten snagged in fishing line and it was all over his neck, head and flippers. It so upset me I got out of the water, hurried into the bustling, little beach town of Haleiwa, to get the number to the turtle hot line here on the island. When i got home I threw a pair of first aid scissors in my beach bag and made a mental note that if I saw a turtle who was in trouble I would do the best i could to help.
